Put it in the books! Week one in a season that was in question has come and gone, and what a week it was. The New Deal Lions (2-2A DI) are 1-0 heading into week two and they are doing it in style. Coming off a 55-8 win against the Smyer Bobcats, the Lions are heading to face the Wellington Skyrockets (4-2A DII) with new road uniforms and a new #9 2A-DI state ranking. They will be heading into Wellington after an explosive performance where the offense scored seven first half touchdowns and gained almost 500 yards. Pair that with a dominant defensive performance, 4 turnovers to 1 touchdown, and it will be a tough game for the Skyrockets.

The Wellington Skyrockets are coming off a 12-2 season where they ended up as a regional finalist. Led by Head Coach Gregg Proffitt, Wellington is bringing only 5 returning starters on either side of the ball. With traditions the Skyrockets have built, they have established a “next man up” mentality where they will be able to challenge whomever they face. Two of the key returning starters for Wellington are Junior running back Marc Ramirez and Junior quarterback Creighton Killian. Ramirez is predicted to be the District Defensive MVP by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. Defensively, look for Mason Folk and Gavin Wood.

In week one, Junior Leric Eaton showed that he is stronger and faster than last year. The connection between Junior Harley Patterson and Senior Kyler Reed is already in mid-season form. Look for up-and-coming Freshman Slade Martin to influence play on both sides of the ball. This strong defender is also a good change of pace back for Eaton. Defensively, it will be important for the Lions to get off the field and continue to set the offense up for success as they did in week one. Lions will look to improve the #9 2A-DI state ranking with a win against the #3 2A-DII ranked Wellington Skyrockets. Lions move to 2-0 with a 28-20 win.
